Policy Matters June 2015 : Another Session in the Books!

Welcome to summer - and the end of the legislative session!  These last few weeks have been hectic as we worked on our top priorities.  Here are some updates:

Domestic Violence

Recently, the ACLU Women’s Rights Project issued a report titled “Silenced: How Nuisance Ordinances Punish Crime Victims in New York,” which talks about the prevalence of nuisance ordinances in New York State, and their chilling effect on domestic violence and crime victims.  Over the past few weeks, our coalition worked tirelessly to move a bill through the Senate that would protect domestic violence and crime victims, enabling them to call for help without fear of losing their housing.  It never made it to the floor for a vote, but we’re already working on a strategy for next year.

When applying for an auto loan, consumers need to know they’re dealing with honest businesses. Legislation was recently introduced that would empower consumers when dealing with unscrupulous car dealerships.

On Long Island, advocates are doing a lot of great work, including coordinating resources and services for unaccompanied minors arriving from Central America.  Penned by our own senior attorney Linda Hassberg, take a peek at this blog post to learn more.

Recent Supreme Court Decisions

#groundbreaking #aca #fairhousing #SCOTUSMarriage - These are just a few of the hashtags trending online, as the Supreme Court issued it’s remaining decisions before breaking for the summer.  We are far, far beyond thrilled to see the Court uphold health care subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, validate disparate impact in fair housing cases, and legalize same sex marriage nationwide!  #LoveWins!

Celebration of Leadership

Once again, thank you all for your support at our Celebration of Leadership event last month.  We truly had an awesome time celebrating the leadership and contributions of Mary Loewenguth and Joe Casion!

Coming Soon….

Please be on the lookout for our in depth end of session legislative wrap-up, providing more detailed information about where our priorities landed.

Until then, make sure to visit our Facebook page and our website to get up to date information. We hope you have a safe and enjoyable holiday!
