Legal Services Restructuring Plan Submitted to LSC

August 1, 2002

After almost a year of intense planning, the New York State Planning Steering Committee submitted its restructuring plan to the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) in July.  LSC has promised a thorough review and a formal response by early September.

LSC is requiring federally funded programs in every state to engage a broad range of key stakeholders in a planning effort aimed at building stronger, more integrated “justice communities.”  Here in New York, the Steering Committee, created by IOLA in 1995, became the Designated State Planning Body for LSC purposes last year.  The Committee was expanded to include additional representation from the New York State Bar Association, the Judiciary, community groups, a client representative, and staff representatives, both union and non-union.
