For Coaches

May 19, 2009

As a C.A.S.H. Coach, you will work with your partner to determine the financial goal(s) to be reached, and then help your partner stay on track to achieving the goal(s) by the end of the program.

Although it’s not required, we find that the best coach volunteers are those with a teaching, counseling or mentoring background. Also, individuals with backgrounds in finance are preferred but not required. We provide the appropriate training, in both relationship building and money management, for the volunteers to work effectively with their partners to achieve the financial goal(s).

C.A.S.H Coaches may assist with financial education in the following areas:

  • starting and maintaining a budget
  • basic money management
  • saving towards a goal
  • understanding credit
  • homeownership
  • car loans

Volunteer coaches are trained to work with their partners for 9-months to set the strategy and approach to achieve specific financial goals. The coaches’ job is to provide encouragement, support and accountability for their partner. They listen and observe, and ask questions to elicit solutions and strategies from their partner. While the coach provides options and an objective perspective, the partner is responsible for taking the steps to produce the results he or she wants.

Commitment:  The C.A.S.H. Coach program runs two sessions annually, in the fall and spring. Coaches are expected to meet with their partner on a monthly basis for approximately 1-2 hours a month. However, the actual monthly commitment will be determined by each coach/partner team.

Meetings: To allow for flexibility within the program, the coach/partner teams will determine when and where they would like to meet for offsite meetings. Suggested meeting locations should be at a neutral/public place, such as a library or restaurant that is convenient for both parties.

Training: Attendance at the 6-hour training session is required for volunteers. The training will cover the basics for situations you may encounter with your partner: money management, counseling techniques, value creation and community resources. Coaches will also have an advisor who will serve as their resource throughout the program. All training materials will be provided.

In as little as 1 hour a month, you can make a big difference in someone’s life.
