Naturalized U.S. Citizen Settles with U.S. Government in Wrongful Arrest Suit

The case highlights the need for Border Patrol agents to have clear arrest procedures that protect the dignity and respect of everyone involved. Today, in a case that illustrates how hyper-vigilant border enforcement can violate people’s civil liberties, three civil legal services firms--Legal Aid Society of Rochester, Worker Justice Center and Empire Justice Center—announced the out-of-court settlement between their client, Gerardo Vazquez-Mentado, and the United States. Mr. Vazquez-Mentado, an Oswego County resident, store owner and naturalized U.S. citizen, brought suit after he was wrongfully arrested and detained by Border Patrol agents. Read More
